How Much Local History Do You Know?

Hermosa Beach’s story begins with the 1784 Rancho San Pedro Spanish land grant, which eventually became part of the sprawling Rancho Sausal Redondo. The name translates to “large circular ranch of pasture land with a grove of willows,” reflecting the area’s agricultural origins. In 1900, a 1,500-acre tract was purchased for $35 per acre and developed by the Hermosa Beach Land and Water Company, marking the beginning of the city’s transformation from ranch land to coastal community.

In its early days, Hermosa Beach was characterized by rolling hills covered in barley fields, where large herds of sheep grazed seasonally. The landscape was dotted with corrals and barns that served the ranching operations between Hermosa and neighboring Inglewood. This pastoral scene would soon give way to urban development as the new century progressed.

The city’s coastal identity took shape in 1901 when the first official survey mapped out the boardwalk on the Strand, along with Hermosa Avenue and Santa Fe Avenue. Construction of the first wooden pier followed in 1904, extending 500 feet into the Pacific Ocean. After storm damage in 1913, it was replaced by a more substantial 1,000-foot concrete pier that remains a beloved community landmark. An auditorium building constructed around 1914 now houses public facilities and the local library branch.

Transportation connections arrived with the Los Angeles Pacific Railway trolley system, which ran the length of Hermosa Avenue before merging into the Pacific Electric Railway’s famous Red Cars. The Santa Fe Railway also served the area, eventually building a modern stucco depot in 1926. On January 14, 1907, Hermosa Beach officially incorporated as the nineteenth city in Los Angeles County, cementing its place as a distinct coastal community.
